File Masks - Advanced Mode
If you're an
advanced user you'll find that Zappit is truly customizable to suit your
individual needs. While Zappit can be used by the most inexperience
beginner, those with advanced computer skills will find Zappit a powerful
and customizable tool to make system configuration and cleanup a snap!
One of the
features that makes Zappit unique is the File Mask feature. In this dialog
you can add masks for any file type you choose. Be sure you know what you're
doing when adding files to a file mask. All files with the extension you add
will be erased from your hard drive. Here is a partial listing of some
types of temporary and junk files you may wish to add to Zappit's File Mask.
Other Types of temporary and junk files
(Advanced Mode)
- .dmp -
Dump file. When Windows (or an application) experiences
a crash, a memory dump is performed. If you don't use
these files (for trouble shooting), delete them, you can
save quite a bit of space! Not removed by Zappit by
default since .dmp files are useful for those who use
them for troubleshooting Windows problems. You can
add .dmp files to Zappit's File Mask feature by adding
*.dmp and the description "Windows Dump File".
- .bak -
Backup file; when a new (data) file is created, some
programs will rename the old version with a .bak
extension. Be careful when removing these files.
Unlike most other system cleaners, Zappit does not
remove .bak files by default. These files sometimes
contain important program backup information in case
primary data becomes corrupted or turns up missing.
Delete .bak files at your own risk. To have Zappit
automatically clear .bak files add *.bak to Zappit's
File Mask feature.
- .cnt -
Help-related file; ever notice those tables of contents
when you launch certain Help files? If you don't need a
table to help you navigate through a Help file, delete
these. They will not come back. Zappit does not remove .cnt
files by default. You can, if you wish, add them to
Zappit's File Mask feature by adding *.cnt and the
description "Windows Help Related Files".
- .fts -
Help-related file; when you perform a search with a Help
file, this is created to make all future searches be
performed quicker. E.G., not worth having around unless
you use Help files on a daily basis. They are re-created
if you do a search in a Help file, so these should be
regularly scanned for and deleted. Zappit does not
remove .fts files by default. You may add *.fts and the
description "Help Related Files" to Zappit's File Mask
feature if you like.
- gid -
Help-related file; when you run a Help file, it creates
a GID to make future accesses to that particular
help file a tad quicker. They're a complete waste of
space. You'll have to delete these on a regular basis,
as they are recreated with every Help file execution.
Zappit removes .gid files by default.
- .old -
Old file; see .bak. Zappit removes this file type
by default.
- .~mp -
Temporary file; see .tmp. Zappit removes this file
type by default.
- .$$$ -
Old file. Zappit removes this file type by default
- .000 -
Old file. Zappit removes this file type by default
- .tmp - Temporary File. Zappit
removes this file type by default
